2012 - The Year in review

2012 has been a mixed bag for PEO TV subscribers. Many hoped PEO TV will launch their HD service towards the end of they year but have been disappointed. The year started off with Star Cricket going off air. There have been a few positives with the addition of a few international channels such as Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and then KBS World. The addition of CinemaWorld in SVOD, however the channel wasn't included as a standard channel and is only available as SVOD.

The addition of local channel Max TV further increases the number of local channels on the platform. Channels such as AXN, Zee Studio & a few others were expected but never materialised. Some steps have been taken in the right direction but it seems that the management have very limited knowledge on pay television operations.

We certainly hope that PEO TV will ramp up the number of international channels and launch an HD service in 2013. Subscribers still complain of delays during changing channels and signals getting stuck and the decoder has to be restarted to restore normal functionality.

PEO TV has the tremendous technical and financial backing of SLT and can certainly provide a much better service than the one already being rendered. They are also not limited by bandwidth problems such as the ones been faced by some competitors, but with all these facilities at their disposal it's sad to see them performing below par.

Channel delay should not be compared to DTV or other satellite operator since IPTV is very different technology.

In satellite (DVB S or DVBS2) you are viewing channels that already tuned to STB. So channel Zapping time only depend on STB processor speed and decryption process.
In IPTV Technology every channel you are viewing is a request you send to particular DSLAM in the exchange. It is looks like you access to internet to see particular web page. There you send a request for particular server and server send the web page you looked for. Happening this process required some times. Think that you are doing same thing in IPTV watching a channel. The process is more complicated in viewing TSTV or VOD since this requires separate dedicated streams between you and server located at central distribution point such as HEADEND premises.

On the other hand satellite service use statistical multiplexing method that if one channel has fast moving video Encoder system limit band width for another channels and increase bandwidth for fast moving channels. But in IPTV it uses constant high bandwidth for every channel.
So you are experiencing high Zapping time (channel changing time) for better quality in PEO TV.

Regarding channel delays, if you can remember channel numbers then it is fine. But what happen if you can't remember them then you should go to channel menu. While going to the channel menu SLT will display number of addvertiesment. If SLT can't reduce channel delays (since it is a request/response model) then please reduce the number of adds at least. We are paying to watch TV not your adds.

I believe if Peo Tv introduces, Zee Studio and other Zee Channels they have an obvious competitive advantage over DTV.
